Marc Marquez continues to dominate the MotoGP 2025 season, and his exceptional form has led former MotoGP world champion Jorge Lorenzo to openly declare that the Spaniard is currently the best rider on the grid.
In a recent interview, Lorenzo didn’t hesitate to heap praise on his former rival. “Marquez is the best: physically, in braking, in tire management—he is on another level,” said Lorenzo, highlighting the multiple factors that define Marquez’s superiority this season.
Unstoppable Momentum in 2025
So far, Marquez’s stats speak louder than words. Riding for Ducati Lenovo, the eight-time world champion has secured five Grand Prix victories and eight sprint wins from just nine rounds. With 270 points, he presently leads the championship standings, 40 points ahead of his younger brother Alex Marquez and an incredible 110 points ahead of the reigning champion Francesco Bagnaia.
This form supports Lorenzo’s belief that Marquez’s physical condition, mental sharpness, and technical mastery have all aligned perfectly in 2025—finally allowing him to extract the maximum potential from the Desmosedici GP25.
Key Wins Proving Lorenzo’s Point
The Qatar GP in April was one of the strongest demonstrations of Marquez’s return to peak form. He not only claimed pole position and won the sprint race, but also controlled the main race with tactical brilliance, despite a tire wear challenge in the final laps. His victory in Lusail was his first since 2014.
Marquez went on to have a flawless weekend at his home event in Aragon. He led every practice session, took pole, won the sprint, and clinched victory in the main event. It was the first time in a decade a rider dominated every session of a Grand Prix weekend.
These performances make it increasingly clear why Lorenzo—and others—view him as the benchmark of excellence in MotoGP this season.
Praise from Fellow Riders and Experts
Lorenzo isn’t alone in this assessment. Several former riders and commentators have echoed similar sentiments. Neil Hodgson, former World Superbike Champion and MotoGP analyst, recently described Marquez as the greatest of all time, citing his victory count and his resilience after multiple injuries.
The legendary MotoGP racer Cal Crutchlow praised Marquez’s unparalleled braking ability, stating, “No one controls the front brake and commits into a corner like he does.” Because of its uniqueness, Marquez’s riding style is impossible to imitate.
These insights support the notion that Marquez’s skills transcend pure speed; it’s his technical mastery, adaptability, and fearlessness that set him apart in the eyes of his peers.
Bagnaia Still Searching for Consistency
In contrast, reigning champion Francesco Bagnaia has struggled to find his rhythm this year, despite riding the same machinery as Marquez. Lorenzo noted that Bagnaia hasn’t fully adapted to the updated Desmosedici and may still be adjusting to the psychological pressure of being paired with a proven champion like Marquez.
Bagnaia currently sits third in the standings and has yet to deliver a dominant performance, while Marquez has already claimed multiple clean sweeps of sprint and main races—most notably in Mugello, where he extended his lead to over 100 points.
Will Marquez Seal the Title?
With 270 points already on the board and multiple consecutive podiums, Marquez appears on course for a record-setting comeback. His consistent pace, aggressive racecraft, and mental edge have rekindled memories of his peak Honda years, and Ducati seems to have provided the perfect platform for his resurgence.
Jorge Lorenzo summed it up best: “Marquez takes risks like no one else. He understands the machine, the race, and the moment. That’s what separates champions from legends.”
As the MotoGP 2025 season approaches its second half, all eyes will be on the number 93. The question now isn’t whether Marquez is back—it’s whether anyone can stop him from taking yet another world title.
